Star 45

Sadly, I don’t have any pictures of this boat.  On the otherhand, you could say I have a bunch of pictures of this boat because it looked like so many of the plain sailboats I watched him build and sail when I was growing up.  The Star 45 is a one-design class of hard chined boats. It’s 45 inches long and everything about its shape, weight and sail is tightly controlled except for the materials.  Dave Holmes built his out of fiberglass.  My father built his out of wood.  It was also his first attempt at making sails for a racing yacht.  I only remember one race he attended. It was a class championship race held someplace in Virginia.  The whole family came.  I don’t remember how Dave Holmes did.  I remember my father placing second.  Rod Carr, who made and sold sails placed in his advertisement the following phrase: “In the Star 45 ACCR, boats with Carr sails placed 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th.”
