The
Santa Maria
The
Santa Maria is the third of what I consider the “Big Three”, with the Challenge
and Rattlesnake being the first two. It
took roughly a year to build the Santa Maria and it has the same attention to
detail as the other two. He sailed it a
couple of times to much regret. The boat
sailed horribly. In all of his other
scale models, he used a motor to help the boat turn. In the case of the Santa Maria, the boat
could only sail downwind and the motor was the only way to bring the boat back
to the windward end of the pond. He
sailed it more than once; probably because the boat looked so nice in the
water. All of the scale models he built
were built so they could be sailed by radio control. As far as I know, only the Santa Maria was
converted into a static display model.
There is a possibility that the Galleon was also converted into a static
display model when it underwent a major restoration. All of the rest could still be fitted with
radio control and sailed again. This was
the last of his major works and the last scale model of any kind for about
eight years.
It
is currently at my sister’s house.
